Overview
Regaining the ability to drive or navigate the community is a critical milestone for independence. This program evaluates a patient’s safety and readiness to return to driving and explores alternative transportation options when appropriate.
Our Approach
We focus on safe driving skills, community navigation, and accessible mobility planning. Our occupational therapists conduct comprehensive clinical and on-road driving evaluations, with patients’ using adaptive equipment as needed. Depending on a patient’s medical history or needs, a neuropsychological driving assessment may be included to evaluate attention, memory, and decision-making skills related to safe driving.
What to Expect
Patients will first complete clinical assessments of vision, cognition, strength, and reaction time. If appropriate, they may proceed to behind-the-wheel evaluations, using adaptive controls or technology as needed. We also help patients learn how to use public transit or paratransit services.
