Neurological Disorders

Overview

Neurological disorders — such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, multiple sclerosis, functional neurological disorder, and stroke — can significantly affect physical, emotional, and cognitive function. Our neurological rehabilitation program helps patients regain independence and quality of life.

Our Approach

Our intensive inpatient program includes three or more hours per day of core therapies (physical, occupational, and speech therapy) overseen by a rehabilitation physician, with 24/7 nursing support. We focus on:

  • Locomotion training: therapy techniques to improve transferring the body from one location to another using a wheelchair or walking (with or without an assistive device).
  • Physical self-care training: techniques to improve self-washing, dressing, using a bathroom, eating, swallowing, and leisure activities.
  • Communication training: techniques to improve speaking or writing, and methods to improve understanding speech or reading.
  • Adjustment to the neurological disease: this involves a staff neuropsychologist who can assess capabilities for problem-solving and self-care and provide counseling for mood support and family assistance.

Your care team includes physiatrists, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, neuropsychologists, case managers, dietitians, music therapists, and recreational therapists. The team collaborates daily to monitor progress and adjust your treatment plan.

What to Expect

Patients can expect a structured schedule of individualized therapies to address motor function, communication, swallowing, cognition, mood, and daily living tasks. Family involvement and education are part of the process, along with support for discharge planning and community reintegration.
