Spasticity Management

Overview

Spasticity is a condition characterized by muscle stiffness, involuntary spasms, and impaired movement. It is often caused by neurological injuries or conditions such as spinal cord injury, brain injury, or stroke. Effective management can significantly improve mobility, comfort, and overall function. We provide specialized treatments including medications, botulinum toxin injections, and baclofen pump therapy to address varying levels and patterns of spasticity.

Our Approach

Our expert rehabilitation physicians conduct comprehensive evaluations to assess spasticity severity and patterns. Then, we tailor an approach to help you achieve functional goals, combining medical interventions with physical and occupational therapy, bracing, and other supportive strategies.

  • Oral medications: First-line treatments often include muscle relaxants such as baclofen, tizanidine, or dantrolene. These help reduce generalized spasticity and improve daily function, especially when symptoms are widespread.
  • Botulinum toxin injections: Physicians identify specific muscles where injections will be most beneficial. Treatments are often used in conjunction with therapy and bracing.
  • Baclofen pump management: For patients with severe or diffuse spasticity, intrathecal baclofen therapy offers continuous medication delivery via a surgically implanted pump. Our team manages all aspects of this therapy, including dosage adjustments, pump refills, and device troubleshooting.

What to Expect

  • Oral medications: Treatment typically begins with a low dose and is gradually increased based on individual response. Some medications may require routine blood work to monitor liver function or other potential side effects. Our team closely monitors for drowsiness, weakness, or other adverse effects and adjusts the treatment plan as needed to ensure safety and effectiveness.
  • Botulinum toxin injections: Injections are precisely guided by ultrasound or electromyography (EMG) to target overactive muscles. Gradual muscle relaxation and improved movement typically occur over the following weeks, with continued therapy to reinforce progress.
  • Baclofen pump therapy: Patients receive regular follow-up visits for pump maintenance and medication adjustments. Therapy is coordinated around the pump’s effects to maximize mobility and function. We provide comprehensive monitoring to maintain safety and effectiveness.
