Brain Injury Program
Brain injuries may be traumatic (caused by an external force to the head) or non-traumatic (caused by medical conditions such as infection, tumor, or lack of oxygen). Whatever the cause, brain injuries can disrupt every aspect of life, from thinking and personality, to movement and sensation. The effects differ from person to person, as does the path to recovery. At UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center, we personalize brain injury rehabilitation to help you regain independence and function. Our multidisciplinary team of experts will guide you through your recovery to keep you moving forward.
Common challenges resulting from brain injury:

Our Approach
Our brain injury rehabilitation supports patients recovering from both traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury. We provide intensive inpatient rehabilitation with three or more hours of core therapies per day (physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as needed) under the direction of a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) and a 24/7 nursing team. We offer numerous additional specialty services as needed, including psychological care, to help you adapt to life after injury.
What to Expect:
Patients participate in a structured daily inpatient therapy schedule tailored to their needs. Your multidisciplinary team works collaboratively daily to help you regain independence, communication, mobility, and self-care skills. We encourage family/caregiver involvement throughout your stay, providing them with the knowledge to aid your recovery. From the moment you begin recovery, we begin planning for your successful transition back home, which often includes ongoing outpatient care.
Spain Rehabilitation Center is one of only 16 nationally designated Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems Programs, which are recognized for excellence in brain injury care, rehabilitation research, and long-term patient outcomes.
