Explore answers to the most common questions asked by UAB patients.
What should I expect during my stay?
SRC patients will receive coordinated care that may involve physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists, as well as case managers and psychologists that will work with you throughout your stay.
Patients typically receive a minimum of three hours of therapy five days per week and varying amounts of therapy the other two days. Our hospital’s design promotes activity around every corner that offers additional ways to recover outside of scheduled therapy. Your individual therapy schedule will be provided the morning after you are admitted, to allow family members/caregivers to plan when they can participate in your therapy sessions. We encourage your family member/caregiver to participate in your care as much as possible, to ensure a safer, more prepared discharge once you’re ready to go home.
How long will I stay?
You will be informed of your expected length of stay within the first week. This time varies depending on each patient’s medical status, functional abilities, and progress.
Can I have visitors?
Two visitors or caregivers are allowed at the bedside at a time, and they must be age 16 or older. Family members/caregivers are identified prior to admission and are expected to participate in your care in preparation for going home.
Can my family spend the night?
One family member/caregiver over age 18 is welcome and encouraged to spend the night, if you wish.
When is the best time to visit?
Due to the daily therapy schedule, visits should be limited to lunchtime and after 4 p.m. when caregivers are not scheduled to participate in therapy.
Where should I park?
SRC inpatient family members/caregivers may park on floors 1-4 in the Rehabilitation Pavilion parking deck which you enter from 7th avenue. This deck should be used for short- term and long-term parking. Parking fees apply to all decks and lots at UAB.
What should I bring?
Patients should bring comfortable clothes, similar to what you’d wear in the gym, such as jogging pants, shorts, T-shirts, and sneakers. Family members/caregivers who plan to stay overnight will need to bring their own essential personal items, too. The checklist below can help you prepare:
- Six to eight sets of loose-fitting clothes. You may need wide-leg shorts or button-down shirts if you have a cast, external fixator, trach tube, or neck brace.
- Proper-fitting closed-toe shoes that are comfortable for working out/walking
- Socks
- Underwear/panties
- Toothbrush/toothpaste
- Comb/brush
- Deodorant
- Lotion
- Razor and shaving cream (electric razor, if taking blood thinners)
- Hair dryer (optional)
Will I continue receiving the same medications I was given while in UAB Hospital?
Yes. If needed, adjustments to your medications will be made as your care progresses.
What are the food options?
SRC offers standard tray delivery and room service options, the same as what patients receive in UAB Hospital.
